After two decades of rampant monument building across the country cartoonist Bernhard Gillam created this double page centerfold for Puck, a weekly satirical magazine. In the illustration Puck, the figure that graced the magazine's masthead (inspired by the character in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream) is trying to show Uncle Sam his idea of a memorial to General Grant, with the subtitle “Let Us Have a Memorial of General Grant that will be Worthy of a Great Nation.”Creator: Bernhard Gillam
