In a series of five articles published almost thirty years after the end of the Civil War, the long-time art supervisor of <em>Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper</em> recounted his wide-ranging experiences as a special artist for the publication from 1863 to 1865. First employed as an errand boy for <em>Leslie's</em> in 1859 when he was eighteen, Becker received on-the-job training at the newsweekly and was dispatched to cover the war in 1863. He covered everyday and major events across the eastern theater of the war, including Gettysburg, the Battle of the Wilderness, the siege of Petersburg, and the fall of Richmond. This is the first article in the series.
