Abraham Lincoln Entering Richmond, April 3d. 1865

This 1866 print depicted Abraham Lincoln's visit to the captured Confederate capital on April 3, 1865. When news arrived about the fall of Richmond, Lincoln immediately left Washington, D.C., to survey the conquered city. This version of the event is more accurate than most of the pictorial homages to Lincoln following his death. Arriving in Richmond by boat and accompanied by his son Tad, Lincoln went on to inspect some of the abandoned sites of the Confederate government, growing numbers of now freed slaves joining his procession through the city. This 1866 print depicted Abraham Lincoln's visit to the captured Confederate capital on April 3, 1865.
