"A True Plan of the Battle Near Leesburg, VA., fought 21st Oct., 1861."
While prints of Civil War battles were readily available in the North, the small number of commercial printers in the South, combined with shortages of paper and ink, resulted in far fewer images of the war from the Southern perspective. This wood engraving from Richmond, Virginia, based on a drawing by an eyewitness after the October 21, 1861 Battle of Leesburg (also known as the Battle of Balls Bluff), provides a schematic overview of the troops and action of one battle.
